ABOUT OUR STATE BOARD OF MASSAGE THERAPY
Disclaimer: This page is intended to provide helpful information concerning the GA Board of Massage Therapy for our members, as many times there are misunderstandings of their role with our profession. This page will cover several subjects and will be updated when pertinent information needs to be brought to your attention. This page is not to be considered any official correspondence connected to or by the state board.
The link to the Secretary of State, Board of Massage Therapy is under the links tab on this web site.
Item 1: The role of the Board of Massage is to regulate our profession. The Board of Massage Therapy posts important information on the official Secretary of State web site under the Board of Massage Therapy. The law, rules and actions, along with public statements are posted and it is each individual therapist’s responsibility to be knowledgeable on the regulations of our profession.
Everyone licensed needs to check the web site on a regular basis to stay current.
Item 2: The actual members of the Board of Massage Therapy are appointed volunteers who serve on the board. They are not state employees and are not the licensing specialists who carry out the daily licensing office business. The Board members are not present at the Professional Licensing Boards office except for scheduled Board meetings throughout the year. The Board has an Executive Director and support staff that carry out licensing business. When contacting the Board office by phone, your call is received by the call center personnel who are experienced in answering questions and assisting you regarding Board of Massage information. Please understand that there are multiple boards and more than 36 professions that these individuals service on a daily basis.
There have been numerous frustrations brought up to the Chapter concerning issues that the Board is unresponsive, did not reply, or resolve your problem. Issues that cannot be resolved by the support staff should be submitted by the staff to the Executive Director or the Board. It will be in your best interest to keep up with your issue by following up with the Board office. The intent of this information is to better educate our members when contacting the state for assistance.
Item 3: The Board of Massage members serve on a voluntary basis and are appointed by the governor. The terms of the board members are covered in the massage law. There currently are open positions on the board and there is a specific process for one to volunteer. The state would appreciate any assistance from our association in getting the word out to a possible volunteer who has available time to function as a board member. The board is especially in need of a consumer (non-Massage Therapist) member to represent the public’s best interest on the board. For anyone interested in serving on the Massage Board, please contact the Governor’s Office of Appointments. You can find that office on the web, go to
www.Georgia.gov, select Online Access to GA government, search for office of appointment, and then click on – Boards and Commissions – How to Apply. The application and instructions are there.
Item 4: Please allow a minimum of two weeks for mail to get to the Board of Massage Therapy office once you mail it. All 36 plus regulatory boards receive mail into one mail room where it is sorted and scanned. It is a lengthy process and can take up to two weeks for your mail to reach its destination. Please plan in advance when mailing documentation that may affect your renewal status such as mailing continuing education certificates during renewal time or an audit.
