AMTA-GA Unit Formation

The Chapter Board has approved the position of Units Chairperson to oversee Units and assist with the formation of Units within the state.  The Units chair reports to the Membership Secretary and the President of the board on all activities.  The Units chair is the liaison between the Units and the Chapter board and is responsible for assisting a new Unit through this process.

The formation of a Unit is governed by the Chapter standing rules.  This paper is a summation of those requirements to assist a member in starting up a Unit in their various state locations.  A copy of the Chapter standing rules will be provided as a Unit begins to take shape.

The steps listed are to help ensure the process is made as easy as possible.

  1.  For any interested member the first step is to contact the Chapter Units Chairperson and work through them.
  1. The Units chair will arrange with the Membership Secretary a general geographical location for the Unit based on prospective member population by county and zip codes.  A membership roster for that area will be generated and provided to the individuals for recruitment.  Rosters come in Excel format.
  1.   The potential new Unit needs to come up with a minimum of five (5) AMTA members who work or reside within the Unit boundary.  It is highly recommended to contact and confirm a reasonable number of members that will support and participate in the Unit.  The Units chair will assist with coaching as to approaches to getting members interested.
  1. The forming Unit will need to compile a petition of names (sample provided) to be submitted to the Chapter board, along with a Unit Formation Request letter (sample provided) so the new Unit can be approved by the Chapter Board.  The formation request letter will need to contain a planned 1st meeting date.  There is a new requirement from AMTA National that any and all officers must acknowledge and sign a Code of Conduct letter (provided) and that must be sent to the Chapter along with the other documents.
  1. The Chapter Board will place the new Unit request on the next board meeting agenda.   The board will normally approve the Unit and the funding from the Chapter after any questions or concerns are satisfied.
  1. The first planned meeting will need to have officer elections.  A Unit must have as a minimum a Unit President, a Unit VP, and a Secretary/Treasurer.  Type of activities and goals for a Unit will be discussed by the Units chair.  Making use of the other Units ideas and activities is encouraged.  Financial planning for the Unit will be coordinated through the Units chair.  A separate page on the Chapter web site is available for each Unit.
